Reconnect

The sky is half of our world - but how well do we know it?

For millennia, our ancestors have tracked the patterns of the sky and placed their history and culture in the stars. Today, space is an industry, and our relationships with the real sky are eroding due to light pollution, indoor lifestyles, fear of the dark, and culture loss.

A relationship with the sky is your birthright.

We want to help you connect to what matters to you - whether that's reading the seasons in the stars, navigating by the sky, knowing the phases of the moon better, or understanding the star stories in your lineage.

Create meaningful connections.

We create real connections by taking astronomy and nature out of the classroom. Our approach prioritizes your direct experience, and combines play, observation, art, science, models, storytelling, questions, and sharing in community.

Programs

We offer a variety of experiences to meet your needs. Check out our free outdoor club, workshops, blog, or partner with us directly.

Philosophy

Our style is primarily influenced by:

  • Informal museum, planetarium, and science center STEM education practices
  • Principles of 'coyote mentoring' from the contemporary Nature Connection movement
  • Current academic discourse in the field of Cultural Astronomy
  • Interactive theatre and art

We weave our cords of connection from many threads. Depending on the program, these threads could look like a human orrery (model) of the moon's orbit, a song about a meteor shower, a starchart and a telescope, or a walk in the dark forest guided only by your hands.

Our Team

Sky Connection is Land Connection

Sky Connection can be practiced anywhere on Earth, (or even in space), but we are currently located in the greater Seattle metropolitan area. We skygaze on the traditional lands of the Coast Salish people, especially lands tended to since time immemorial by the Snoqualmie, Duwamish, and Snohomish peoples.

Knowing the place we live gives us important context for understanding our sky. The sun's motion is particular to our latitude, the moon is tied to the tides, and the mountains that surround us create our horizons. Stargazing in this area also has its unique challenges, such as urban light pollution and frequently overcast skies - but that's what makes our sky connection so vital.  A relationship with our sky means we can also enjoy the colors in the clouds and the clearing of the mists.
